We’re seeking a Design Engineer (Protection & Controls) to support engineering design for electric substations, transmission lines, and generation facilities, focused on control systems and fault protection. You’ll partner with Protection & Controls engineers and cross-functional teams to develop designs that support system reliability and safety, and provide technical support through construction, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
What You’ll Do
- Develop Protection & Controls designs for substations, transmission, and generation equipment to support safe, reliable operation.
- Specify substation equipment and components (e.g., bus, grounding, conduit, switches, breakers, transformers, relay panels, instrumentation).
- Design protective relaying, metering, and SCADA interfaces using standards, past projects, regulations, and system requirements.
- Gather/analyze system ratings and inputs (voltage, power, ampacity, impedance, CT ratios, relay settings) to support compliance/reporting and evolving requirements.
- Build project scopes, bills of material, and cost estimates to support budgeting and multi-year planning.
- Support operations and construction teams with troubleshooting, mis-operation review, failure analysis, testing/commissioning support, and event report follow-up.
- Review technical drawings/specifications to ensure installations align with codes, standards, and engineering requirements.
- Provide direction/quality review for designers/technicians; review and redline drawings as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Knowledge of core engineering principles and advanced mathematics.
- Power engineering exposure/knowledge, including:
- Reading/interpreting schematic, wiring, and logic diagrams
- Understanding relay protection schemes across Generation/Transmission/Distribution
- Ability to develop basic drawings, relay logic, and settings for protection designs
- Strong organization, attention to detail, and communication skills.
- Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced/high-accountability environment.
- Proficiency with standard tools (Word/Excel/databases) preferred.
Preferred / Nice to Have
- Utility experience related to substation, generation, and transmission protection & control systems.
- Experience reviewing/redlining P&C drawings and validating bills of material.
