Enhancing Security Visibility for a State Medicaid Department

The State Medicaid Department is responsible for managing, distributing, and maintaining healthcare benefits for a significant portion of their state’s residents, serving approximately 87,000 Medicaid recipients across 13 district offices statewide. However, the department faced a critical challenge regarding security visibility and access control within its internal network infrastructure.
CHALLENGE:
The State Medicaid Department lacked adequate security visibility and access control within its internal network. The Office of Technology, a separate agency, had sole control over security measures and possessed all security visibility into Medicaid’s operations. Consequently, The State’s Medicaid Department was unable to detect or mitigate potential security threats, leaving the department vulnerable to cyberattacks and data breaches.
SOLUTION:
To address these security vulnerabilities, GDH provided expertise in firewall implementation, deploying Fortinet Firewalls across all 13 state locations. These firewalls were meticulously configured to establish robust internal security policies tailored to the specific needs of the State’s Medicaid Department.
Additionally, GDH implemented a comprehensive suite of security measures including app control, intrusion prevention, Fortinet Web Application Firewall, web filtering, antivirus, SSL Deep inspection, DNS Filtering, GEO Blocking, and more.
Furthermore, GDH conducted comprehensive training sessions to educate end-users on the new security policies and guidelines, ensuring understanding and compliance across the organization.
RESULT:
The implementation of Fortinet Firewalls, along with the additional security measures, empowered the State’s Medicaid Department with unprecedented security visibility and control over its network traffic. By actively monitoring and logging outbound traffic, the department could effectively block unauthorized connections to blacklisted countries, preventing potential security breaches.
Since the deployment, the State’s Medicaid Department has successfully intercepted and addressed over 22.5 million attempted connections to malicious entities.
Additionally, the enhanced security measures have enabled the department to identify and manage 150 security incidents that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. This heightened visibility not only safeguards sensitive healthcare data but also potentially saves the State’s Medicaid Department millions of dollars in security-related incidents.
Furthermore, with improved visibility, the department can respond to security threats swiftly, minimizing potential damage and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery to Medicaid recipients.
