Role Summary
This position involves supporting the commissioning and startup of power generation and energy systems through electrical engineering expertise. It is a mid-level role responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient energization of electrical systems such as switchgear, transformers, generators, and associated control systems. The role encompasses performing testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and coordination activities to facilitate system handover and operational readiness.

Responsibilities

  • Provide electrical engineering support during commissioning, startup, and system turnover phases of power projects.
  • Lead and support electrical testing activities including insulation resistance, hi-pot, relay testing, and functional verification.
  • Validate power system studies such as short circuit, coordination, and arc flash analysis, ensuring alignment with as-built conditions before energization.
  • Support pre-commissioning procedures, including loop checks, calibration, and protection system verification.
  • Coordinate and participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), and Ready for Startup (RFSU) processes.
  • Collaborate with project teams—including management, construction, controls, and operations—to ensure system readiness.
  • Conduct field testing, troubleshooting, and resolve issues during commissioning and startup activities.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards such as NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and safety protocols.
  • Support integration and testing of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and other power generation systems.
  • Develop, review, and maintain commissioning documentation including Inspection Test Records (ITRs), test records, redlines, and turnover packages.
  • Identify and drive resolution of punch list items to facilitate smooth system handover.
  • Coordinate with vendors on installation, testing, and commissioning efforts.
  • Support the development of standardized commissioning processes and tools, emphasizing continuous improvement.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical support during all phases of commissioning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET Accredited) or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology with a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in electrical engineering, power systems, or commissioning within power generation, industrial, or related industries.
  • Working knowledge of electrical power systems and equipment including switchgear, transformers, and generators.
  • Experience with electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, and control systems.
  • Strong understanding of commissioning, testing, and startup procedures.
  • Proficiency with power system analysis tools such as ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, or MATLAB.
  • Familiarity with protection relay testing equipment such as Omicron, Doble, and Megger.
  • Knowledge of protection coordination, arc flash analysis, and grid integration.
  • Ability to work effectively in field environments and adhere to safety protocols.
