Role Summary
This senior-level, individual contributor role focuses on designing and evaluating future-proof POS hardware and edge computing architecture within a high-volume quick service restaurant environment. The position requires hands-on expertise in POS systems, edge computing, and infrastructure planning to optimize hardware longevity, enhance system resilience, and support technological advancements such as AI integration. The role involves providing architecture recommendations to ensure scalable, reliable, and efficient POS operations over the next 5 to 10 years.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed evaluations of current POS hardware and deployment models to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Design and assess edge-based architectures aimed at reducing dependency on POS terminal OS end-of-service (EOS) and enabling offline operations in high-volume store environments.
  • Define optimal workload distribution between POS endpoints, store edge, and cloud environments based on future growth and technology trends.
  • Analyze hardware and operating system options against long-term scalability and AI-driven workloads.
  • Develop clear architecture diagrams, tradeoff analyses, and strategic recommendations aligned with business and technical goals.
  • Support capacity planning to anticipate future infrastructure demands related to emerging technologies like AI, real-time analytics, and automation.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to ensure architecture resilience, including operating in mixed hardware environments and extending hardware lifecycles.
  • Stay informed about industry standards and emerging technologies impacting POS and edge computing infrastructures.
  • Assist in defining hardware and OS strategies to ensure seamless operation during network disruptions and degraded conditions.
  • Provide technical expertise and documentation suitable for delivery to both technical and executive audiences.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of high-volume POS engineering experience in QSR or retail environments.
  • At least 3 years of experience designing or operating edge computing architectures in distributed environments.
  • Extensive hands-on POS hardware experience with vendors such as NCR, Oracle MICROS, or HP.
  • Strong understanding of POS transaction flow, payments, peripherals, and offline/degraded network behavior.
  • Proven ability to design systems supporting store-level compute models capable of offline operation.
  • Experience with OS imaging, lifecycle management, especially Windows LTSC and Linux for edge/back-end workloads.
  • Solid knowledge of long hardware refresh cycles, mixed hardware environments, and hardware lifecycle realities.
  • Familiarity with capacity planning, future software growth considerations, and infrastructure scalability.
  • Ability to evaluate emerging technologies like AI, real-time analytics, and automation impacting store compute needs.
  • Strong analytical and diagramming skills, capable of producing comprehensive architecture documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills for delivering technical recommendations to diverse audiences.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and be available to work on-site.
