Role Summary
The Database Architect is a senior-level position responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing enterprise-grade database environments across both on-premises and cloud infrastructures. This role leads modernization efforts by transitioning legacy SQL systems and establishing data architecture standards. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performance data solutions aligned with organizational goals.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, evaluate, and implement database management systems, including data modeling, relational architecture, metadata structures, and configuration management.
- Define and enforce standards, controls, documentation, and operational procedures for database environments.
- Advise development teams and business stakeholders on data-driven solutions, DBMS capabilities, and performance tuning strategies.
- Ensure efficient, secure, and cost-effective data availability by optimizing queries, indexes, and server configurations.
- Implement databases with a focus on access methods, batch processing, validation, security, documentation, and statistical analysis.
- Utilize data mapping, mining, and transformation tools to develop robust data pipelines.
- Determine optimal storage structures and capacity planning to meet organizational demands.
- Prepare system requirements, source analysis, and process design throughout project implementation.
- Architect and manage data across cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premises environments.
- Lead legacy to cloud migration initiatives and develop modernization roadmaps to enhance data architecture.
- Design and optimize data ingestion, transformation, and integration workflows in collaboration with development, DevOps, and data engineering teams.
- Provide technical guidance and leadership to junior engineers and analysts to ensure best practices in database architecture.
Qualifications
- Extensive experience with enterprise DBMS platforms such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or similar systems.
- Advanced SQL skills including query design, optimization, stored procedures, and indexing strategies.
- Strong data modeling expertise encompassing ER modeling, normalization, schema design, and data warehouse architecture.
- Proven hybrid cloud experience managing data across on-premises systems and cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Knowledge of NoSQL database solutions and architecting NoSQL data stores.
- Proficiency with ETL/ELT tools such as SSIS, Informatica, Azure Data Factory, Glue, or equivalent.
- Solid understanding of security, access controls, encryption, compliance, and auditability standards.
- Performance engineering skills including query tuning, resource optimization, and workload analysis.
- Experience with secure data integration between legacy systems and cloud repositories.
- Ability to develop enterprise-wide data architecture roadmaps and modernization strategies.
- This position requires eligibility for a U.S. Government security clearance. In accordance with federal law, U.S. citizenship is required (ability to obtain and maintain a T5 federal adjudicated security clearance).
- Minimum of 8 years of experience with a BS/BA, 6 years with an MS/MA, or 3 years with a PhD.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
- Strong collaboration skills across technical and non-technical teams, with a focus on clear documentation and effective communication in fast-paced environments.
Publishing Pay Range: $60.00 – $65.00 hourly.
